Barbecue Tahini Sauce. Barbecue plus tahini equals pure delicious ecstasy! The versatility of this sauce is amazing and so is the flavor. It's your next must have condiment!

I like barbecue. I like sauces with tahini. So why not combine the two?? I don't know!!! One day it just hit me. So I did it...and it was amazing! Simple whole food ingredients are combined to make this incredibly versatile sauce.

This Barbecue Tahini Sauce Is Life

It's mostly tahini based, with a homemade barbecue twist, versus a barbecue sauce with a touch of tahini. It's a dip, a sauce, a dressing, a drizzle...you name it! I used this in so many different ways since it's creation. Including just diving in face first and licking the jar I kept it in. Not even kidding. Every single way I had it was amazing! I'm sure there are many more ways waiting to be discovered too! In fact be on the lookout for my next post on one delicious recipe using this incredible sauce!

    Ingredients

    • 6 tablespoons tahini (¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons)
    • 10 teaspoons tomato paste (3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon)
    • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
    • ¾ teaspoon garlic powder
    • 3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
    • 3 teaspoons molasses

    • sea salt , to taste
    • ⅛ teaspoon chili powder , optional for a small kick
    • ½ cup water (can use more or less depending on preferred consistency)

    Instructions

    • Place ingredients into a high speed blender or food processor and blend until smooth. You can also just use a whisk or fork to mix well if you have a good quality smooth tahini.

    Notes

    • Adding more water will make it more of a drizzle or dressing, less water makes it more of a dip. I’ve used it both ways and they are equally as great.
    • Chili powder optional for extra spice.
    • Recipe makes about 1 cup, serving size is 2 tablespoons.
Ways To Serve This Barbecue Tahini Sauce:
    • Add a touch more water and drizzle over salads
    • Spread on bread for sandwiches
    • Add to burgers and wraps

This sauce is so good! I had a barbecue tahini sauce on a goddess bowl in a vegan cafe in Asheville, NC almost two years ago and I’ve been trying to duplicate it at home to no avail. This is almost identical. Thank you for this great recipe!

I plan on making this tomorrow and using it in some type of black bean, quinoa, corn bowl I'm making. Limited produce in quarantine right now! This recipe has been saved for a while and now feels like the time to make great use of it! I'll update after we try it!

Hi Debbie, I would say that this is good for about 5-7 days in the fridge.

Thank you for providing nutrition information. How much constitutes a serving?

To clarify; you have calories for "one large jar" but how much is say, 1 tablespoon!

I thought this was pretty good but the liquid smoke was over-powering. Maybe I added more than 1/4 teaspoon. I didn't measure : (. I tasted zero tahini and a whole lot of smokiness/BBQ taste. It wasn't bad, and my boyfriend looooved it, but I love tahini and was sad I got no hint of it in the sauce. It was probably my fault! I think I will do again and omit the liquid smoke altogether. In general, though, this sauce with the "power bowl" was a great and healthy dinner. Got my creative juices going about bowls in general!

Hi Lauren! Yes, you definitely should measure it next time because even a tad extra liquid smoke can change the flavor a lot. It's powerful stuff! LOL! But I'm glad your boyfriend loved it. I would add maybe just 1/8 teaspoon next time as it does contribute to the bbq flavor. Or you can always just add more tahini! Thanks so much for giving it a try!
