Steak Sauce
A few months back, I was faced with the challenge of using up 4 pounds of portobello mushrooms. Why did I have that many mushrooms you ask? Oh because my Instacart shopper misread my order for 4 mushrooms…and brought me 4 pounds.
I was traveling at the time and sent an order to my house so that I was prepped for the week ahead, one of the amazing reasons I love Instacart. My husband send me a photo of our fridge and wanted to know if I was planning on selling mushrooms out of our home. LOL!
While I love this grocery delivery service and it has literally gave me back time for my family, mistakes like these happen. But lucky for you, this got me in the kitchen creating all the things I could for using up mushrooms!
How do you use steak sauce?
Steak sauce is good for a variety of recipes. For meat eaters, it is used on steak, like the name suggests! But it is still really awesome for non meat recipe! Here are some great ways to use this steak sauce recipe:
- Tofu
- Tempeh
- Veggie burgers
- Portobello mushrooms burgers
- Baked potatoes
- Portobello steak
- Roasted veggies
- Crispy Chickpeas
- As a dip!
Basic ingredients
Traditionally, steak sauce is made from some sort of tomato base and can have added vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and spices.
When I set to create my version, I wanted a steak sauce without Worcestershire sauce, I wanted whole food ingredients and things that were easy to find. So I settled on:
- Tomato paste
- Balsamic vinegar
- Tamari/Soy Sauce
- Maple syrup
- Garlic powder
- Ground black pepper
- Optional hot sauce
Storing tips
Homemade steak sauce stores best in jars or bottles that are air tight. I personally love these!

I tried it as written and it tasted very unbalanced. It works as a base for like a ketchup or a barbeque sauce, but I had to add more things to make it work
veggiesdontbite says
I’m not sure what you mean by unbalanced but we all have different preferences so if you prefer to add things to it then by all means do what you prefer. We love it as is, as do others!

Colleen says
This looks great – how did you use it with the mushrooms?
veggiesdontbite says
Hi Colleen! I can’t believe I missed this comment, so sorry! I brushed it on the mushrooms as they cooked on the grill, much like a basting sauce or marinade!
