This simple dessert is the perfect summer recipe. The kids love it, especially paired with your favorite vegan ice cream or even dairy free yogurt!

Keep it simple or dress it up with extra flavor, either way you won't be disappointed! One of the many beautiful parts about this recipe for grilled pineapple is that you can either make it outdoors on a grill, or indoors in a pan, whatever is easier for you.

    Ingredients

Sure, you can just throw plain pineapple on the grill, but why not add more flavor? The following ingredients are highly recommended to make the glaze for grilled pineapple:

    •  Whole pineapple
    • Lime juice
    • Dairy free butter
    • Brown or coconut sugar
A white plate with slices of pineapple, lime, sugar, butter and mint.

    How to Grill Pineapple Slices

The super easy steps to make BBQ pineapple are:

    1. Season the pineapple.
    2. Cook until browned on each side.
    3. Enjoy!

    Serving Suggestions

Enjoy the grilled pineapple slices on their own, or try serving any of these other ways:

    • As a garnish for cocktails, like this Spicy Pineapple Jalapeño Margarita
    • Top Vegan Yogurt for a healthy breakfast.
    • Add an extra depth of flavor to Pineapple Salsa.
    • Use as a topping for tacos.
    • Enjoy with a scoop of ice cream for dessert!

    Flavor Variations

When it comes to grilled pineapple recipes, I prefer the simplicity of fresh lime and pineapple, but the optional butter and sugar add a depth of flavor. Plus, it's fun to mix things up with different tastes! Try any of the following additions or substitutions next time:

    • Cinnamon
    • Rum
    • Shredded coconut
    • Chipotle powder
    • Chili powder
    • Fresh mint
    • Fresh cilantro
    • Other citrus, lemon or orange
    • Salt
    • Hot sauce

    Tips for Cutting Pineapple

Grilling pineapple slices or wedges is easiest so they don't fall through the grates. Don't worry though, cutting up a whole pineapple isn't quite as hard as it seems!

    • Most importantly, make sure you use a really sharp knife.
    • You can either cut off the rind or keep it on.
    • Slice off the top and bottom of the pineapple.
    • Cut it in half length wise.
    • Remove the core, then slice into ½ - ¾ inch thick pieces.
    • How many pieces you get will depend on size of slices.
    • I got about 16 pieces (8 each half).

    Preparation Tips

    • Either a grill or pan will work. You can use a pan with grates for added aesthetics, but any pan works. Or use an outdoor grill or electric panini-like grill.
    • Using fresh pineapple will give you the best flavor. In a pinch you can use frozen, but make sure to defrost it first. If you have to use canned, make sure to buy the kind that’s in pineapple juice, not syrup.
    • How long to grill the pineapple will depend on your grill or pan. Keep an eye on the slices and pull them off once dark brown grill marks appear.
    • Prepare the pineapple in advance to save on time day of.
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.

    Common Questions

Is grilled pineapple good for you?

It sure is! Pineapple is low in calories while packing in plenty of healthy vitamins and minerals.

    Can you reheat grilled pineapple?

You certainly can. For best results reheat in a pan, but a quick 10-15 second microwave will also do the trick..

How do you remove the core from a pineapple?

Once the pineapple is cut in half or in quarters, it's easy to use a knife to remove the core. Just cut about one inch from the center.

    What goes good with pineapple?

Both sweet and savory flavors pair well with pineapple. Pair this grilled pineapple recipe with grilled veggies for dinner, other fruit for breakfast, or top ice cream for dessert!
