I love french toast, and this finger food friendly version is all the rage in my house. Super fun to make and even better to eat!

Starting the day off with happy kids is the absolute best way to start a day! For some reason, eating food with your hands is way more fun than using boring old silverware. So, ditch the utensils and dig in to a finger food feast!

    Ingredients

You'll need the following items in order to make this easy breakfast treat:

    • dairy free milk
    • ground flax
    • almond flour
    • maple syrup
    • vanilla extract
    • cinnamon
    • sea salt

    Tips and tricks

Keep the following in mind for the most delicious French Toast Sticks:

    • For the best French toast you want a thick softer fluffy bread. Full loaves you can cut work best.
    • Use gluten-free bread to make this recipe gluten-free.
    • Soak the bread for about 5-10 seconds, if you soak it too long it will get mushy and fall apart. If you prefer less soft French toast, then only dip for a second or two.
    • A flat baking dish is the best to use for the cinnamon sugar coating mixture. If you want the flavor but not as sweet, simply sprinkle on top instead of rolling in the mix.
    • You can save time in the morning by making the mix the night before and store it in the fridge, and slicing the bread and storing it in an airtight container. Then all you have to do is dip and cook!
    • Believe it or not you can freeze French Toast Sticks! Once they've cooled, store them in an airtight freezer safe container. You can keep them separated with parchment paper so they don't stick together. Just take out however many you need and re-heat in a toaster oven, on the stovetop, or in the microwave.

    Common Questions

How do you make French toast sticks from scratch?

Slice the bread, dip in your mixture, cook in a pan util crispy and serve! I also like to coat them with cinnamon and sugar once they're cooked.

How do you make French toast crispy not soggy?

Don't let them absorb a lot of the mix, just dip them for a second just enough to be coated. Also, make sure you're cooking them in a hot preheated pan.

How long do you cook French toast sticks in the oven?

Cooking the French Toast Sticks in a pan is the best way to get the perfect crispy texture. If you do choose to bake the in the oven, I'd suggest baking them at 375°F/190°C for about 15 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

    Ingredients

    • 9 thick slices of your favorite bread cut into 1 inch sticks gluten-free if needed (see note)

    Mix:

    • 2 cups dairy free milk
    • 2 tablespoons ground flax
    • 2 tablespoons almond flour
    • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • ½ teaspoon sea salt

    Coating, optional:

    • 1 cup cane sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • ¼ cup dairy free butter , optional

    Instructions

    • Whisk all the mix ingredients in a shallow bowl until combined well.
    • Mix the coating ingredients if using. Using a flat baking dish makes it easier to coat.
    • Make sure your pan is nice and hot. Once hot, turn down to medium heat.
    • Dip each stick of bread into the mix and allow to soak for about 5-10 seconds. You want them soaked but not too soft and falling apart. If you prefer less soft French toast, then only dip for a second or two.
    • Put on a hot pan, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until browning and crisp.
    • Set on a plate and allow to cool slightly. Then brush each one with butter, if using. You don’t need the butter, it just helps the sugar coating stick better.
    • Put each stick into the cinnamon sugar and roll to coat. You can also sprinkle it on for a less sweet treat.
    • Enjoy!

    Notes

    • For the best French toast you want a thick softer fluffy bread. Loaves you can cut work best.
    • This makes 9 pieces of bread, but sliced into sticks. Serving size is for one whole piece of bread that has been sliced into 4-5 pieces.
    • Nutrition facts include the coating.
