Dipping Sauce for Pigs in a Blanket

What would pigs in a blanket be without some tasty dip options? Here are some ideas to try:

    • Ketchup
    • Vegan Ranch
    • Yellow Mustard
    • Dijon Mustard
    • BBQ Sauce
    • Easy Pizza Sauce
    • Vegan Nacho Cheese
    • Buffalo Sauce (without butter)
    • Vegan Queso Dip

    Preparation tips

The following information will help you perfect the art of making these gluten free pigs in a blanket:

    • Choose burrito size tortillas that are as soft as possible. Flour or gluten-free flour works best.
    • If your tortillas aren’t soft and pliable:
      • Wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds.
      • If they're still not soft and warm, heat in 15 second increments until they are.
      • You can also steam them using a double boiler.
    • When dipping in the batter, allow tortillas to soak for about 30 seconds.
      • Also, don’t leave them too long or they will fall apart.
    • You can trim the hot dogs and tortillas any way you want to make them fit. If you want them pretty, then cut the strips a little smaller than the hot dog pieces so they show at each end
    • Use your favorite carrot dog recipe instead of store bought veggie dogs for a vegetable based option.
    • For a crispier crust, cook a little longer.

    Storage tips

Whether you have leftovers or want to prepare then in advance, you're going to want to do the following:

    • Store cooked pigs in a blanket in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
      • Before sealing in the storage container, let them cool. Otherwise they'll steam and get soggy.
    • To reheat with the crispiest results use an oven, toaster oven, or air fryer at 350° until warm.
      • To warm in a hurry, you can microwave for 30 seconds or until heated through.

    Batter:

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 375 F/ 190 C
    • Whisk all batter ingredients in a shallow dish.
    • If your tortillas aren’t soft and pliable, warm them by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and placing them in the microwave for 30 seconds. Check and if not warm and soft, warm for 15 second increments until they are. If you don’t have a microwave, then steam them using a double boiler.
    • Cut the hot dogs into 3 equal pieces. Slice the tortillas into 4 equal strips. You can trim the hot dogs and tortillas any way you want to make them fit. If you want them pretty, then cut the strips a little smaller than the hot dog pieces so they show at each end.
    • Dip each tortilla strip in batter, making sure both sides are covered. Allow to soak for about 30 seconds to get them nice and soft. Don’t leave them too long or they will fall apart.
    • Roll up a hot dog piece in a strip of tortilla sealing the end. It should stick since it is wet.
    • Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat with each piece.
    • Bake for 30 minutes, or until browning on the edges. You can cook longer if you want them more crisp.
    • Enjoy warm! Dip in ketchup and mustard.

    Notes

    • You want your tortillas to be as soft as possible for the best end result. You want them burrito size, not taco size. Also, flour or gluten-free flour works best.
    • You can adjust the size of the hot dogs and tortilla strips to fit them however you want.
    • Use your favorite carrot dog recipe instead of store bought veggie dogs for a vegetable based option.
    • This makes 12 pigs in a blanket, serving size is 3.
